What We Talk About When We Talk About Love
Something I’ve heard said before: they always come back, they always want more.
It’s been four years. They say your first love sticks, it’s true. He booked a hotel for two nights. A bit much, but that’s his style and mine too.
When I travel I pack books based on size: small enough to fit in a purse. I grabbed a book of short stories called ‘What We Talk About When We Talk About Love’ by Raymond Carver, which I’ve read before but not recently. I remember now that I was reading it for the first time when I met him, and lent it to him. He said, he liked it but they were all sad.
Bridges, Raymond Carver, Summer, life and ending before beginning. Symbols that make up that era; a good one, full of opportunity. I spent a lot of time walking and being alone and also in love. I saw a lot of things and felt deeply about them.
So, I will see him and talk and laugh and walk and maybe something else besides that. Expectations are managed but it’ll be good to see him. What we talk about when we talk about love is nostalgia, redemption, anticipation, sweetness, warmth and heat. Wandering down a shady street. Springtime, rebirth, there’s nothing like it.
